Preah Vihear Temple World Heritage- Heritage Tourism Site Severely Hit by Rocket

The Ministry of Tourism, Kingdom of Cambodia hereby presents its utmost compliments to the UNWTO’s past and ongoing amicable cooperation, support and assistance for the sustainable and responsible tourism development of Cambodia.

It has been a core focus on the trend of conservation and protection effort for heritage tourism in which UNESCO has made its greatest effort and endeavor to conserve and restore cultural and historical sites worldwide. Heritage tourism has manifestly showcased its potential in socioeconomic growth by generating the opportunities of revenue, additional income, employment, SMEs business pro-poor, sustainable and responsible tourism and especially its contribution to the conservation and protection effort of invaluable heritage treasures. Moreover, it has been highly appreciated by visitors about the grandeurs of history and substantially benefited host country particularly the local communities. Quite a number of Cambodia tangible and intangible heritages have been listed as World Heritage by UNESCO. In particular, the globally well-know ancient millennium-build temple of Preah Vihear is sacred place and was also listed by a plenary session of the UNESCO’S World Heritage Committee (WHC) on 7th July 2008 in Quebec, Canada.
However, it is our deepest regret to inform you that Thailand as one of WHC signatory states has discarded the global effort I conserving and protecting World Heritage tourism, has caused catastrophes on the innocent World Heritage “sacred Preah Vihear temple” and its peri-zone of Cambodia including a Buddhist Pagoda: Wat Keo Sokha Kiri Svarak were hit by rocket, artillery and mortar shells. Hence, it is really a grave sorrow for the innocent Preah Vihear temple and Buddhist pagoda. These acts are visible and undeniable contraventions to the UNESCO Convention on Protection and Conservation of World Heritage of natural and cultural resources, and negatively impacted on the world dynamically driven and focused conservation and development of heritage tourism.
