Birds Seen In Cambodia

The forests and floodplains of Cambodia form refuges for many threatened bird species that have been extirpated from much of their former range. These include critically endangered waterbirds like giant and white-shouldered ibis as well as three species of critically endangered vultures. Great opportunity for bird-watching.

The Masked Fin foot is globally endangered, with estimates of less than 2,500 left globally, due to human disturbance and habitat loss. This mysterious fellow is seen in Cambodia.

Preah Vihear Temple World Heritage- Heritage Tourism Site Severely Hit by Rocket

The Ministry of Tourism, Kingdom of Cambodia hereby presents its utmost compliments to the UNWTO’s past and ongoing amicable cooperation, support and assistance for the sustainable and responsible tourism development of Cambodia.

It has been a core focus on the trend of conservation and protection effort for heritage tourism in which UNESCO has made its greatest effort and endeavor to conserve and restore cultural and historical sites worldwide. Heritage tourism has manifestly showcased its potential in socioeconomic growth by generating the opportunities of revenue, additional income, employment, SMEs business pro-poor, sustainable and responsible tourism and especially its contribution to the conservation and protection effort of invaluable heritage treasures. Moreover, it has been highly appreciated by visitors about the grandeurs of history and substantially benefited host country particularly the local communities. Quite a number of Cambodia tangible and intangible heritages have been listed as World Heritage by UNESCO. In particular, the globally well-know ancient millennium-build temple of Preah Vihear is sacred place and was also listed by a plenary session of the UNESCO’S World Heritage Committee (WHC) on 7th July 2008 in Quebec, Canada.
However, it is our deepest regret to inform you that Thailand as one of WHC signatory states has discarded the global effort I conserving and protecting World Heritage tourism, has caused catastrophes on the innocent World Heritage “sacred Preah Vihear temple” and its peri-zone of Cambodia including a Buddhist Pagoda: Wat Keo Sokha Kiri Svarak were hit by rocket, artillery and mortar shells. Hence, it is really a grave sorrow for the innocent Preah Vihear temple and Buddhist pagoda. These acts are visible and undeniable contraventions to the UNESCO Convention on Protection and Conservation of World Heritage of natural and cultural resources, and negatively impacted on the world dynamically driven and focused conservation and development of heritage tourism.

Angkor Tops List of "Most Recommended" World Heritage Sites

A recent UNESCO / Trip advisor Survey reveals Angkor is the most recommended World Heritage site by a quarter millions travellers worldwide and that 72% would do more to help heritage conservation if they knew how.
TripAdvisor revealed the results to date of the biggest analysis ever conducted of UNESCO’s World Heritage sites around the world.
The two year partnership between TripAdvisor, and UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre launched in October 2009 to raise awareness of and gain travellers’ support to preserve natural and cultural sites inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Within the partnership, TripAdvisor will also donate up to $1.5 million (USD) of support to the World Heritage Centre to help monitor the conservation of the world’s most important cultural and historic sites.
Via on-site and email campaigns, TripAdvisor has, to date, collected nearly a quarter of a million (244,690) feedback submissions from travellers who have visited 789 of UNESCO’s recently expanded list of 911 World Heritage sites. The results provide a unique insight into the views and recommendations of travellers themselves. As part of the partnership, TripAdvisor shares the feedback to the World Heritage Centre so that it may better engage UNESCO member states in matters of site conservation.
TripAdvisor travellers have given the nod to Angkor, Cambodia as the number one recommended UNESCO site to visit in the world, describing it as amongst other quotes, “Absolutely breathtaking” and “One of the wonders of the world.” The second and third most recommended World Heritage sites are both in Italy and are respectively the Historic Center of Rome, the properties of the Holy See, and the Historic Centre of Florence.
The TripAdvisor travellers’ feedback also highlights those World Heritage sites they consider need the most attention. At the top of UNESCO’s sites in ‘Worst Condition’ comes the Kasbah of Algiers in Algeria, described as a “crumbling site”. The site includes remains of old mosques, Ottoman-style palaces and traditional urban structures.
Because countries often hope to draw additional tourism following the inscription of their sites onto the WH List, traveller feedback from TripAdvisor can help them address some of the issues raised and improve tourism to their sites.
TripAdvisor is encouraging the contribution of reviews and opinions from its large and passionate community of millions of members to provide much needed information about the condition of World Heritage sites so they may be better protected. In order to compile traveler feedback on nearly 900 World Heritage sites across the globe, UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre invited TripAdvisor, via its millions of members and technological expertise, to provide traveler insights and support to the Centre.
As part of the two-year campaign, TripAdvisor has also pledged to donate up to $1.5 million U.S. of support, including a cash donation that will be allocated to UNESCO World Heritage initiatives. Travelers can learn more about how to help at www.tripadvisor.com/worldheritage.

Cambodia's coastline awarded as world most beautiful bay - by Ministry of Tourism online news

PHNOM PENH, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Club of the World's Most Beautiful Bays has officially recognized Cambodia's coastal areas as its member, the minister of tourism, Thong Khon confirmed Tuesday.

The recognition was made after Cambodia's proposal in May last year.

"With the club's recognition, we have optimism that our clean and well-preserved beaches will attract more foreign tourists,"he said, adding"it will also be an impetus to encourage more investors to the areas."

Cambodia's coastline is stretching in the length of 450 km in four provinces of Koh Kong, Sihanoukville, Kampot and Kep.

It is the country's second most popular destination for tourists after Siem Reap's Angkor Wat temple, the world heritage site.

The club was established in March 1997, in Berlin, Germany. Including Cambodia, it has 27 countries as member with 33 bays to be recognized as the most beautiful bays in the world, said the minister.

According to the club's criteria, to be listed as the world's most beautiful bay, a bay must be under protection project with a wildlife and flora area. Also, it must be recognized by both local and regional level, and it must possess at least two features recognized by UNESCO in the cultural or natural assets categories.

Tourism industry is one of the main four pillars supporting Cambodian economy. In 2010, the sector received 2.5 million foreign tourists generating the total revenue of 1.75 billion U.S. dollars.

Chi Phat is mainland South East Asia’s largest remaining tract of rainforest situated directly in the heart of the Cardamom Mountains which is situated in Koh Kong province in southwest of Cambodia on the banks of the Phipot River and comprises four small villages (Chi Phat, Chaom Sla, Kam Lort, and Teuk Laork) an area that has been severely affected by warfare, commercial logging, and hunting. Economic development was stalled for decades due to conflict, abuse of resources and communities by big traders, and the areas’ economic isolation.

The Chi Phat Ecotourism Site was established in 2007 by the environmental NGO called Wildlife Alliance. The Chi Phat Commune is made up of 2,500 people (around 550 families). The people are followers of Buddhism, but do not consider themselves to be very religious by nature. Each family cell is independently organized, with little or no social network to rely on. In the past, the people of Chi Phat experienced great suffering at the hands of the Khmer rouge regime, and are still struggling today to support their families.

Chip Phat offers a number of activities for those looking to travel off the beaten path. The site is located within  the Cardamom Mountains and provides for views of diverse landscapes and wildlife, in addition to exploring small villages and ancient burial sites containing cultural artifacts. After arriving Chi Phat by boat, the various tours activities such as trekking, biking, motorcycling, bird watching tours are ready to gear up, the home stays from a single night to the multi overnight trips are available to accommodate guests as their local family members and friends.

Depending on the length of stay and the trail chosen, the traveler can: view wildlife, bat caves and ancient sites containing burial jars, relax at the numerous waterfalls and rivers, watch birds and nature by motorboat or paddle around in a tradition rowboat for mangrove forest view.  The time spent at Chi Phat , however short or long , is coupled by the warm and hospitable atmosphere that the traveler will experience while staying at campsites arranged by local tour guides and/or guesthouse and home stays owned and operated by villages in the community. “Covering 6% of Cambodia, the Cardamom Mountains are home to endangered and threatened species like Asian elephants, Indochinese tigers, Malayan Sun Bears, Gibbons, and Siamese crocodiles as well as the Irrawaddy and humpback dolphins in coastal areas. The Cardamoms are part of the Indo-Burma hotspot, an internationally recognized biodiversity hotspot, hosting more than half of Cambodia’s 2,300 bird species”.

The Chi Phat Community, together with several NGOs & Responsible Tour Operators are developing ecotourism activities and facilities, which will provide a sustainable alternative livelihoods, help protect biodiversities and enhance their local natural resources.

Naturally, your positive impact of tourism at  Chi Phat should be maximized economic profit to local people due to villagers are employed like: tour guide, cook, staff, locally owned home stay, other supplier chains and community fund which shall be distributed to build a village infrastructure, education, elder support and healthcare services etc.

Prek Toal Bird Watching

The Tonlé Sap "Large Fresh Water River", but more commonly translated as "Great Lake"  is a combined lake and river system of major importance to Cambodia. The Tonlé Sap is the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia and is an ecological hot spot that was designated as a UNESCO biosphere in 1997. The Tonlé Sap is unusual for two reasons: its flow changes direction twice a year, and the portion that forms the lake expands and shrinks dramatically with the seasons. From November to May, Cambodia's dry season, the Tonlé Sap drains into the Mekong River at Phnom Penh. However, when the year's heavy rains begin in June, the Tonlé Sap backs up to form an enormous lake.

For most of the year the lake is fairly small, around one meter deep and with an area of 2,700 square km. During the monsoon season, however, the Tonlé Sap river, which connects the lake with the Mekong river, reverses its flow. Water is pushed up from the Mekong into the lake, increasing its area to 16,000 square km and its depth to up to nine meters, flooding nearby fields and forests. The floodplain provides a perfect breeding ground for fish living and producing center to feed Cambodian people. With its magnificent flooded forests, we bring you to a new unrevealed destination named Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary.

Each year, millions of fish come to spawn in the seasonally flooded forest surrounding the lake, attracting myriad water birds. Villages along the shores live with the rhythm of the season and the floods. Prek Toal is one of the most attractive floating fishing villages on the Tonle Sap lake, with a school, hospital, restaurants, shop and even a pagoda. Just behind the Prek Toal village are flooded forests with bird sanctuaries. Every year, between December and March, thousands of birds come to fish and to breed here.

In Sangker River, two hours boat trip from Siem Reap or Battambang (during a higher level of water), lies a magnificent Prek Toal Biosphere Reserve.  The 31,282 hectares reserve is a haven for many bird species, including large water birds, such as Black-headed Ibis, Brahminy Kite, Herons, Kingfisher, Painted Stork, Milky Stork, Spot-billed Pelican, Grey-Headed Fish Eagle to name a few.  Prek Toal is known to be the best water bird breeding ground in Southeast Asia.  According to one local NGO Osmose, about a decade ago many birds are in near extinction since the locals over harvested their eggs.  Today, the NGO helped the locals improving their lives through income generated from sustainable tourism.

Naturally, your positive impact of tourism at Prek Toal should be maximized economic profit to local people and natural sanctuary at the area, and they shall provide a sustainable alternative livelihoods, help protect biodiversities, and enhance their local natural resources.
